About Sarah

I grew up with Anne of Green Gables and Laura Ingalls Wilder, with my grandmother’s snickerdoodles and my mom’s old Singer sewing machine. I believe there is more value in the old than the new, and often more wisdom in the old, slow way of life than in today’s drive-thru existence. The introduction of my 1949 Singer Sewing Book says “A person with a hobby is a person whose life is interesting. When the mind and the hands are occupied with the creation of something useful and attractive, there is no room for discontent, boredom, petty worries, fears and jealousies…”
My tendency these days is toward too many hobbies… I graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a degree in English, emphasis in Creative Writing. I married Chris and moved to the foothills of Northern California, where I worked as a reporter and editor of a small town newspaper. When I found myself pregnant with my first child, I quit that job to get my first novel written before my son Riley arrived. That novel and several children’s stories were complete when my daughter Sonora made her appearance. By the time my son Jamey was born, it was becoming painfully clear that I am not one of those writers who can crank out the stories while the children play quietly at her feet.
Since then, and the arrival a couple years later of my daughter Jude, life has been a little crazy around here. I rediscovered a love of sewing and photography and picked up a set of knitting needles for the first time. My own horseback riding has been put on hold; the older kids take lessons every week. Writing is a treat now, and one not often indulged in. There’s soccer practices and homework to do, 4-H meetings and diapers to change. It’s not often I can think a coherent thought, let alone write it down.
When there’s a moment I can, I turn to Tevis.
